Artist Statement
Maryam Ebrahimi is a Toronto-based artist known for her limited colour palettes, layered compositions, and seamless brushwork. Her paintings explore depth, movement, and hidden elements, inviting viewers to discover unexpected textures and details within each work. Her collection Fly Me Away explores themes of love, family, migration, and isolation. Inspired by her experience of moving to Canada and being separated from family during the pandemic, feather-like brushstrokes and bird forms emerge from the canvas as symbols of longing, connection, and belonging. Drawing on her Persian heritage, the bird forms also reference the first letter of the Farsi alphabet. Through layered surfaces, transparent glazes, and contrasting textures, Ebrahimi creates a delicate balance between movement and stillness, connection and distance—reflecting the ongoing interplay of yin and yang in her practice.
